Hudson St. Patrick’s Day Parade heading into fifth year
Montreal comedian Joey Elias named Grand Marshall
Preparations are “in full gear” for the 5th annual Hudson St. Patrick’s Day Parade, taking place this year on March 15.
Officially kicking things off, a parade committee announced this week that Montreal comedian Joey Elias will lead the procession as this year’s Grand Marshall.
“Joey Elias is simply the funniest guy around,” Jim Beauchamp, one of two main organizers of the event, said, adding, “We couldn’t be more pleased.”
Beauchamp and fellow head organizer, Gary McKeown, say work is well underway for the event that has become a huge draw in the region.
In a tribute befitting his comedic background, Elias will be feted - and roasted - during a special Grand Marshall dinner that will include more than simply presenting him with a ceremonial green sash.
“We’ve planned a great evening for people to attend,” Beauchamp said. “Joey’s friends and other comedians will talk about why they think he should not be Grand Marshall of this year’s parade. So it’s going to be a great night with lots of laughs.”
The dinner and comedy roast will take place on Friday, February 21 at the Whitlock Golf and Country Club, located at 128, côte Saint-Charles, in Hudson.
Elias’s comedy career began in 1992 after he lost a pool hall bet to a friend and had to show off his funny side. Since then he has appeared numerous times at Montreal’s Just For Laughs International Comedy Festival, where three of his gala shows were televised. In 2004 and 2006, Elias also participated in the Just For Laughs Cross Canada Tour, and has appeared in his own CTV special Comedy Now!, as well as host of CBC’s All Access Pass. Elias traveled to Afghanistan in 2004 and 2007 to entertain Canadian troops stationed in Kandahar and Kabul.
Entering the parade
Beauchamp and McKeown say now is the time for groups and organizations to register to participate in the March 15 parade that will take place along Main Rd., in Hudson. Meanwhile, the search is also on for the 2014 Queen of the Irish, while the committee is considering candidates for Queen Mum, and Irishman of the Year.
Those who wish to enter a float, or to march in the parade can register now by filling out an application form at the parade’s website: www.hudsonparade.com.
