Ab­bott Is­lan­der coach gar­ners top award

John Ab­bott Col­lege men’s bas­ket­ball team head coach Da­vid King was na­med Coach of the Year during the recent Ré­seau du sport étu­diant du Qué­bec, RSEQ, bas­ket­ball awards. King, who is well known wi­thin the Mon­treal bas­ket­ball com­mu­ni­ty, has led the Is­lan­der men’s team since he was na­med to the po­si­tion in 2009. This is the first RSEQ award for the coach, who owns and is head ins­truc­tor for Dor­val ba­sed Hoops­ter Aca­de­my, which of­fers sports con­cen­tra­tion pro­grams for John Ren­nie High School’s spor­té­tudes pro­gram, as well as Chêne-Bleu High School, among others. King will re­present RSEQ, the go­ver­ning bo­dy of all school sports in Que­bec, during the up­co­ming CCAA cham­pion­ships.

And JAC Is­lan­der players were not left out of the awards ac­tion. Guard Jus­tin Owen-Ren­wick, who ave­ra­ged 15 points per game, was na­med Roo­kie of the Year while al­so being na­med to the se­cond league all-star team. Al­so ma­king the all-star team were Is­lan­der players Kee­von Small and Ri­car­do Monge. For their part, the La­dy Is­lan­ders won the sports ethics award in the team ca­te­go­ry, while stu­dents Me­lis­sa The­riault and Ri­chard Monge were na­med the top student-ath­letes.
