Abbott Islander coach garners top award
Student athletes also nab honours
John Abbott College men’s basketball team head coach David King was named Coach of the Year during the recent Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec, RSEQ, basketball awards. King, who is well known within the Montreal basketball community, has led the Islander men’s team since he was named to the position in 2009. This is the first RSEQ award for the coach, who owns and is head instructor for Dorval based Hoopster Academy, which offers sports concentration programs for John Rennie High School’s sportétudes program, as well as Chêne-Bleu High School, among others. King will represent RSEQ, the governing body of all school sports in Quebec, during the upcoming CCAA championships.
And JAC Islander players were not left out of the awards action. Guard Justin Owen-Renwick, who averaged 15 points per game, was named Rookie of the Year while also being named to the second league all-star team. Also making the all-star team were Islander players Keevon Small and Ricardo Monge. For their part, the Lady Islanders won the sports ethics award in the team category, while students Melissa Theriault and Richard Monge were named the top student-athletes.
