Hudson St. Patrick’s Day Parade paints town green
Thousands enjoy annual event
Downtown Hudson became a sea of green Saturday during the fifth annual Hudson St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
Amid sunny skies and seasonal temperatures, thousands of spectators lined up along Main Rd. to watch the parade and cheer for heros like former Montreal Canadiens enforcer Chris Nilan, who was the parade’s firstever Chief Reviewing Officer, Grand Marshall Joey Elias, parade queen Stephanie Kennedy and princesses Toni Nesbitt, Shannon Marchand, Alannagh Maciw, and Tiffany Blouin. Tom Whelan also marched after being chosen as Irishman of the Year, as did provincial and federal officials including NDP leader Thomas Mulcair and NDP MP for Vaudreuil-Soulanges Jamie Nicholls. Both men walked in the parade sporting black bowler hats. Meanwhile, incumbent Liberal Party candidate and Soulanges MNA Lucie Charlebois was in good spirits while waving to supporters, as was longtime Liberal MNA Yvon Marcoux, who has held the riding since 1998 and who recently announced he will not seek reelection. Marcoux was also warmly greeted by spectators while walking. Also marching was Liberal JacquesCartier MNA Geoff Kelley.
Many local groups, organizations and businesses marched in the festive event that has become a major draw for Hudson. Businesses like the Château du Lac and Cunninghams Pub, which spearheaded the event idea five years ago, sold spirits to parade goers, while other businesses offered things like coffee, hot chocolate, chili and more.
When asked, many spectators said they preferred attending the local parade rather than the larger Montreal St. Patrick’s Day parade, which took place downtown the following day.
“It’s so much nicer to come here because it’s closer but still fun. I’d rather do this than drive all the way downtown and fight traffic and crowds,” said one enthusiastic woman.
It was a seven-gun salute for members of the 65th NY Regiment Infantry, who drove in to participate in the parade.
