Saint Lazare Cyclo-Tour a sunny success
Hundreds take to streets in family friendly ride
More than 800 cyclists of all ages participated in the 21st annual Saint Lazare Cyclo-Tour on Sunday. Riders on everything from two, three and four wheels began gathering at the town’s main municipal park, Parc Bédard, at 9 a.m. in preparation for the 10 a.m. kickoff. Sporting a shirt with her own design on it, elementary school student Mailee Benoit was presented with a plaque after her drawing was chosen as the official logo for the 2014 Cyclo-Tour edition. Meanwhile, SQ police and Saint Lazare firefighters were on hand to ensure the safety of each participant, while Bernard St-Hilaire of St-Hilaire Bicycle in Saint Lazare continued his long-running tradition of manning a small repair station offering free help with any last minute problems. “I didn’t have to work very hard today,” the affable business owner joked. “I just helped fix a few flats and some broken chains, things like that.” St-Hilaire has offered the same free help for each of the 21 years the event has run. He also donated a bicycle which was raffled off before the May 31 event kicked off. Recreation dept. staff credit a perfect sunny day for the event’s overwhelming success.
After participating in the 11Km or 21Km. rides, cyclists were invited back to the park to enjoy airbounce rides, a hotdog lunch, games and animation.
