Saint La­zare Cy­clo-Tour a sunny suc­cess

Hun­dreds take to streets in fa­mi­ly friend­ly ride

More than 800 cy­clists of all ages par­ti­ci­pa­ted in the 21st an­nual Saint La­zare Cy­clo-Tour on Sun­day. Ri­ders on eve­ry­thing from two, th­ree and four wheels be­gan ga­the­ring at the town’s main mu­ni­ci­pal park, Parc Bé­dard, at 9 a.m. in pre­pa­ra­tion for the 10 a.m. ki­ckoff. Spor­ting a shirt with her own de­si­gn on it, ele­men­ta­ry school student Mai­lee Be­noit was pre­sen­ted with a plaque af­ter her dra­wing was cho­sen as the of­fi­cial lo­go for the 2014 Cy­clo-Tour edi­tion. Meanw­hile, SQ po­lice and Saint La­zare fi­re­figh­ters were on hand to en­sure the sa­fe­ty of each par­ti­ci­pant, while Ber­nard St-Hi­laire of St-Hi­laire Bi­cycle in Saint La­zare conti­nued his long-running tra­di­tion of man­ning a small repair sta­tion of­fe­ring free help with any last mi­nute pro­blems. “I didn’t have to work ve­ry hard today,” the af­fable bu­si­ness ow­ner jo­ked. “I just hel­ped fix a few flats and some bro­ken chains, things like that.” St-Hi­laire has of­fe­red the same free help for each of the 21 years the event has run. He al­so do­na­ted a bi­cycle which was raf­fled off be­fore the May 31 event ki­cked off. Re­crea­tion dept. staff cre­dit a per­fect sunny day for the event’s overw­hel­ming suc­cess.

Af­ter par­ti­ci­pa­ting in the 11Km or 21Km. rides, cy­clists were in­vi­ted back to the park to en­joy air­bounce rides, a hot­dog lunch, games and ani­ma­tion.
