Ope­ra di­va Natalie Cho­quette co­ming to Hud­son next month

One night show fea­tures star at fun­ny best

EThe Hud­son Vil­lage Theatre (HVT) will bring mul­ti­lin­gual ope­ra so­pra­no Natalie Cho­quette to Hud­son for a one night per­for­mance next month.

ar­lier this year the pro­fes­sio­nal En­glish theatre’s board of di­rec­tors an­noun­ced it was going to bring big names and qua­li­ty pro­duc­tions to the off-is­land theatre. And they are de­li­ve­ring with this sum­mer’s li­neup.

Cho­quette will ap­pear on the HVT stage in one of her La Di­va shows.

The Au­gust 9 eve­ning show will fea­ture Cho­quette at her crea­tive best.

It tells the tale of a frus­tra­ted maes­tro trying to tame an ec­cen­tric and in­ter­na­tio­nal­ly re­now­ned group of di­vas (played by Cho­quette.) The cast of di­vas, which Cho­quette crea­ted, will ca­vort in ou­tra­geous cos­tumes while per­for­ming some of ope­ra’s grea­test hits from Ver­di to Bi­zet, Ger­sh­win to Puc­ci­ni. Cho­quette will de­li­ver ope­ra­tic gold while han­ging laun­dry, gar­gling wine, ea­ting spa­ghet­ti, dan­cing with au­dience mem­bers or tea­sing the maes­tro. On her web­page Cho­quette says she is a ‘so­pra­no who loves to have fun’, ad­ding that her shows are ‘ins­pi­red by ope­ra and hu­mour, world mu­sic and clas­si­cal mu­sic, the cir­cus and va­rie­ty.’

Her ori­gi­nal shows have played to au­diences around the world.

The di­va

Cho­quette, who was born in To­kyo to di­plo­mat pa­rents, grew up around the world in places that in­clu­ded Mon­treal. She has be­come known for pai­ring a za­ny sense of hu­mour with the of­ten se­rious world of ope­ra, which she pokes fun at.

The Di­va, a cha­rac­ter crea­ted by Cho­quette, is of­ten fea­tu­red in her shows. Cho­quette first de­bu­ted her for­mu­la of ope­ra­tic co­me­dy in Mon­treal in 1994 with the show Whoe­ver Said Ope­ra was Bo­ring. The re­sult, done in col­la­bo­ra­tion with pia­nist Scott Bradford, was ac­clai­med in Que­bec and France. Cho­quette went on to charm lar­ger au­diences du­ring the Just for Laughs Fes­ti­val, the Que­bec In­ter­na­tio­nal Sum­mer Fes­ti­val, and the Lanaudière In­ter­na­tio­nal Fes­ti­val. Soon af­ter her album La Di­va in Canada, which in­clu­ded 13 tracks from the show, was re­lea­sed in Eu­rope, and Asia.

Her dis­co­gra­phy in­cludes 13 other re­leases. Cho­quette in La Di­va will play at the Hud­son Vil­lage Theatre, lo­ca­ted at 28 Wharf Rd., at 8 p.m., on Aug. 9. For ti­ckets or show­times call the box of­fice at 450 458-5361.
