arlier this year the professional English theatre’s board of directors announced it was going to bring big names and quality productions to the off-island theatre. And they are delivering with this summer’s lineup.

It tells the tale of a frustrated maestro trying to tame an eccentric and internationally renowned group of divas (played by Choquette.) The cast of divas, which Choquette created, will cavort in outrageous costumes while performing some of opera’s greatest hits from Verdi to Bizet, Gershwin to Puccini. Choquette will deliver operatic gold while hanging laundry, gargling wine, eating spaghetti, dancing with audience members or teasing the maestro. On her webpage Choquette says she is a ‘soprano who loves to have fun’, adding that her shows are ‘inspired by opera and humour, world music and classical music, the circus and variety.’
Her original shows have played to audiences around the world.
Choquette, who was born in Tokyo to diplomat parents, grew up around the world in places that included Montreal. She has become known for pairing a zany sense of humour with the often serious world of opera, which she pokes fun at.
The Diva, a character created by Choquette, is often featured in her shows. Choquette first debuted her formula of operatic comedy in Montreal in 1994 with the show Whoever Said Opera was Boring. The result, done in collaboration with pianist Scott Bradford, was acclaimed in Quebec and France. Choquette went on to charm larger audiences during the Just for Laughs Festival, the Quebec International Summer Festival, and the Lanaudière International Festival. Soon after her album La Diva in Canada, which included 13 tracks from the show, was released in Europe, and Asia.
Her discography includes 13 other releases. Choquette in La Diva will play at the Hudson Village Theatre, located at 28 Wharf Rd., at 8 p.m., on Aug. 9. For tickets or showtimes call the box office at 450 458-5361.
