Bail denied for man facing several charges, including stealing mail
Bail was denied Wednesday to a man facing charges of robbery, possessing stolen mail, drug possession, resisting a police officer and having bullets in his possession — despite being prohibited to do so.
Austin Mason McBean, 22, remains in custody after the judge sided with the Crown following the hearing at the Medicine Hat Courthouse.
McBean was arrested on Sept. 10 after residents in a Southeast Hill neighbourhood called police about a suspicious person going through papers. The suspect ran away when approached by police, dropping items including mail not addressed to him, an open case of bullets, cell phone, meth and pills. Police were eventually able to arrest the man.
McBean also faces a robbery charge for a Sept. 4 incident where he allegedly took off with items from a local convenience store and got into a tug of war with the store clerk.
McBean was already on release for other charges, including housebreaking for which his co-accused pled guilty to last week, and allegedly attempting to pass a cheque fraudulently. His next court appearance will be Sept. 27.
A bail hearing which started Wednesday will continue today for a man charged with trafficking meth while on probation for a previous drug trafficking conviction.
A decision for the release of Ryan Michael Riley was put over as the accused tries to find a residence he can reside at that the judge feels will be more stable, and keep him away from those involved with drugs.
Riley was arrested on Sept. 12 after police began investigating him for suspected trafficking. Riley is currently on a year-long probation, after completing a 15-month sentence for trafficking.
The Crown opposes his release.
A Medicine Hat woman was ordered to stand trial for drug-related charges following a preliminary hearing. Jennifer Cote faces multiple charges including two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking, two counts of simple possession and one count of possession of property obtained by crime.
