Sun Devils split opening weekend

-

Aidan McLean and Isaac Loran had an opening weekend to remember.

The pair of Medicine Hat Sun Devils combined for 20 points to lead their team into the win column with an 18-8 blowout of the Calgary Sabrecats Sunday after opening the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League junior B Tier 2 season with an 11-6 loss to the Calgary Axemen Saturday.

McLean kicked off his season with two goals and an assist Saturday at Stu Peppard Arena and Loran added a pair of helpers. While it wasn’t enough to prevent the Axemen from taking a decisive victory, the pair of Sun Devils responded with a commanding performance the following day.

Both potted four goals in the landslide victory, while Loran tacked on four assists and McLean added three.

Daniel Drefs kept the pace with four goals and an assist in Sunday’s win after contributing with a goal in Saturday’s setback, while Tegan Rogal followed up a goal of his own Saturday with a hat trick Sunday.

Calgary’s Kyle Thomas led the Axemen with five goals and an assist and Justin McAdam added three goals and three assists to help sink the Sun Devils Saturday.

Sabrecats Adam Kremnica and Tyler Connelly combined to put the Sun Devils down early in Sunday’s matchup, but Medicine Hat responded with eight consecutive goals to take control of the game. Calgary’s Jared Gardiyash led the Sabrecats with four goals and Kremnica added a pair.

The Sun Devils return to the Kinplex for their home opener on Saturday against the Olds Stingers at 6:30 p.m.
