merchandising, footwear, accessories and jewelry. “There’s lots of glitter, glitz, metallics and lights.”

For high school backpacks, look for laptop and tablet sleeves in the packs. “And we’re also seeing a throwback to an old-fashioned rucksack — so a double strap and a buckle,” says Fernandes. “It’s a real shift, particularly at the high-school level to a nostalgic backpack.”

“Other great updates on backpacks include a detachable hood to up the fun factor,” says Colleen Uncao, spokesperson for Marshalls Canada. Pencil cases come down to personal choice still it seems — from soft cases to hard shell. Novelty is also key when it comes to design. “We’re seeing tribal trends, social media such as emojis and texting, and an obsession with everything unicorn or mermaid-related,” says Fernandes. Mixing it up is the way to go with shoes this fall. “We’re seeing multi-media in shoes, so mixing fabrics like sequins and glitter with floral patterns and studding for more personalization,” says Fernandes. “We’re also seeing laser cut details and metallic finishes.” Lights are also being featured more and more as accessories on footwear. “With footwear that lights up, it’s iridescent/holographic and colour changing materials that change in water or light,” she adds. “Texture on notebooks is huge trend,” says Uncao. “Along with the sequins, we’re seeing fuzzy animal faces with cut out ears or lashes. It has a playful and interactive element for kids.”
