The Cana­dian in­ven­tor turned a fas­ci­na­tion with ra­dio com­mu­ni­ca­tion into a ca­reer that in­cluded in­vent­ing what be­came the pager in 1949.

Gross at­tempted to in­ter­est doc­tors in the de­vice, which would al­low them to be alerted im­me­di­ately to pa­tient emer­gen­cies, but they joked it would ruin their golf games.

Some 300 mil­lion pagers would be sold by the end of the last cen­tury.
