Running for over 30 years now, Canadian Finals Rodeo has been offering kids with special needs a special rodeo experience dubbed Rodeo Magic, according to Northlands event development specialist Mackenzie Parish.

“It’s an important community piece to connect our contestants with our public schools in Edmonton and surrounding areas and for the kids who have special needs to have that experience in the dirt and meet cowboys and cowgirls and some royalty,” Parish explains, adding 155 kids have been invited to participate this year.

“It’s great for the kids to experience something they may not be able to do on a day to day basis because of crowds or how busy it gets. We give them one-on-one contestant times as each one of them are teamed up with our rodeo stars. They get to team up for hands on activities and it’s really cool for them.”

Activities include a mix of fun-sized rodeo events, like Stick Horse Racing and Bronco Barrel Riding.

Hay bales are set up like stock animals for the steer roping event, giving the kids real targets to practice on. There’s even a horseback ride.
