Sportscast­ers have been throw­ing to tape for more than 50 years. But the prac­tice of in­stant re­play got its far­from-in­stant start in Canada.

It was dur­ing Hockey Night in Canada’s 1955-1956 sea­son that CBC pro­ducer George Ret­zlaff in­tro­duced a “wet­film” tech­nique to record and play back a goal, al­beit sev­eral min­utes af­ter it hap­pened.

Amer­i­can net­work CBS in­tro­duced true in­stant re­play in 1963 dur­ing an Army-navy foot­ball game.
