Watt and Mer­cilus out for sea­son with in­juries

Hous­ton’s J.J. Watt and Whit­ney Mer­cilus will miss the rest of the sea­son with in­juries.

Coach Bill O’brien con­firmed that both were sea­so­nend­ing in­juries on Mon­day, a day af­ter Watt broke his left leg and Mer­cilus, a line­backer, tore a pec­toral mus­cle in a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Watt sus­tained a tib­ial frac­ture to end his sea­son early for the sec­ond straight year.

Ser­bia into World Cup, Ire­land into play­offs

Ser­bia qual­i­fied for the

World Cup for the sec­ond time since be­com­ing an in­de­pen­dent na­tion in 2006 af­ter beat­ing Ge­or­gia 1-0 on Mon­day, while Ire­land won in Wales 1-0 to seal sec­ond place and a spot in the play­offs. At the end of a tense fi­nal round of qual­i­fy­ing, Gareth Bale’s Wales dropped to third place in Group d and was out of con­tention for a place in next year’s tour­na­ment in Rus­sia.
