Melissa Valgardson’s new home may not look di erent to the naked eye, but visit her basement and you’ll notice something missing: a furnace. Valgardson and her husband, both engineers, built a socalled passive house. The energy-e icient structure uses extreme insulation to cut down energy use. It’s the irst and most important of the three R’s – reduction. Passive House Canada held seminars in Calgary recently to promote the concept.

Winnipeg wants to leave the moniker of its accessible transit service in the rearview, inviting votes on a “more inclusive name” for Handitransit. The current name and logo were adopted in 1977. The new options are: Winnipeg Transit Plus, Winnipeg Transit Connect, and Winnipeg Transit Link.
