1) a hard sur­face, and 2) plen­ti­ful food. These ba­sic el­e­ments are found at both Oct­lantis and Oc­topo­lis — the only other cephalo­pod city ever found. Dis­cov­ered in 2009, Oc­topo­lis was thought to be a freak oc­cur­rence be­cause oc­to­puses built it on top of a hu­man­made chunk of metal on the sea loor. The dis­cov­ery of Oct­lantis dis­proved this. Why would oc­to­puses choose to live in cities? That’s a topic for fu­ture study.
