A better welcome, fewer French tests

Montreal Gazette - - OPINION -

Re: “Spot French tests legally dubious, groups argue; Unfairly targets foreign students who were promised citizenship” (Montreal Gazette, April 19)

It seems to me that an immigrant who has passed a language test with a mark of 70 per cent should be congratulated and encouraged, since I don’t doubt, based on daily interaction, that many of the native-born population would find it a challenge to achieve that level of success. This province, to its shame, leaves a great deal to be desired when it comes to truly welcoming newcomers. Time to practise what we preach! Mary Rolland, Katevale
