Two suggestions for safer cycling
Allison Hanes’s column laments that too many bike lanes in Montreal are nothing more than painted lines on the road, but many large cities in the world successfully utilize these to delineate bike paths in symphony with paved pathways dedicated to bicycles.
That being said, two important ingredients for biking safety are: 1) cyclists must obey the law and 2) we must create public awareness by installing signs (“Watch for motorcycles and bicycles”) — for example, on the dash boards of taxis and rental cars and on the outside of city buses and other service vehicles.
