New mayor about to make his­tory

Mayor-elect Valérie Plante will make his­tory on Thurs­day when she’s sworn in as the first fe­male mayor of Mon­treal. The cer­e­mony will be broad­cast live on the city’s web­site from Marché Bon­sec­ours, be­gin­ning at 4 p.m. Plante beat in­cum­bent De­nis Coderre in the mu­nic­i­pal elec­tion on Nov. 5. Plante’s party, Pro­jet Mon­tréal, won a ma­jor­ity of seats on city coun­cil. Be­sides Plante, 102 other mem­bers of city coun­cil and the 19 bor­ough coun­cils will be sworn in Thurs­day. The mayor, bor­ough may­ors and coun­cil­lors elected for the next four years in­clude 53 women, filling 51 per cent of the seats.
