New mayor about to make history
Mayor-elect Valérie Plante will make history on Thursday when she’s sworn in as the first female mayor of Montreal. The ceremony will be broadcast live on the city’s website from Marché Bonsecours, beginning at 4 p.m. Plante beat incumbent Denis Coderre in the municipal election on Nov. 5. Plante’s party, Projet Montréal, won a majority of seats on city council. Besides Plante, 102 other members of city council and the 19 borough councils will be sworn in Thursday. The mayor, borough mayors and councillors elected for the next four years include 53 women, filling 51 per cent of the seats.
