Not all seniors are equally lucky
Re: Aging Well series (Montreal Gazette, March 3-9)
The series profiled an interesting group of people — examples of individuals who live long and well, surrounded by support groups, whether family, friends or staff.
But what about centenarians living in governmentfunded homes or institutions? Who interacts with them? Who helps them shower? What is their diet like? What are their recreational activities like?
I am 73 and have an active life. I belong to the Pointe-Claire YMCA. I take a class on documentary film. I can (but for how much longer?) get around on our broken public-transit system. I have a wonderful family. I am a feisty senior. I’m one of the lucky ones.
What happens to the others?
