Let’s not forget other horses

Re: “Death shows it’s past time to ban calèches: Plante” (Montreal Gazette, Nov. 6)

Such a distressing story to read. The service of animals in our society for the most part is taken for granted. Poor Charlot. What life did he have before he ended up as a carriage horse? What about all the other horses that at the end of their usefulness are sent to auction and end up in the horse meat trade? How is that ethical? How is it OK to ship live horses as cargo from Canada to Japan for slaughter? So feel sad for Charlot, but also for the countless horses that face horrific, terrifying deaths. There’s a Charlot everywhere if anyone cares enough to look, different scenarios but the same outcome. Used up and used some more before the final dollar amount is squeezed out of them.
