BIG SKY COMES UNDER FIRE
Critics of the ABC drama Big Sky, starring Ryan Phillippe, shown, are claiming that the TV series is insensitive to real-life missing and murdered Indigenous women in Canada. They also claim CTV should have provided further context before the series aired.
Indigenous groups including the Union of British Columbia Indian Chiefs took issue with a storyline about kidnapped women in Montana that skirts a real-life epidemic in that state, as well as in B.C. They are asking ABC and CTV to add an information card to the end of future episodes that explains the MMIWG crisis.
“By omitting it and by not including any references ... they're adding to the issue of the genocide against Indigenous women and girls,” the Union of British Columbia Indian Chiefs secretary-treasurer Kukpi7 (pronounced COOK'PEE) Judy Wilson said.
