Fed­er­a­tion CJA will cap off its 2017 fundrais­ing cam­paign and its 100th an­niver­sary cel­e­bra­tions with a spe­cial clos­ing event on Novem­ber 20 at the Palais de Con­gres.The fea­tured at­trac­tion at the event will be an “in con­ver­sa­tion with” pre­sen­ta­tion with ac­claimed ac­tor Liev Schreiber. Best known for his per­for­mances in such films as the Os­car-win­ning “Spot­light”, the World War II drama about the Biel­ski Par­ti­sans in Poland “De­fi­ance”, and in the ti­tle role of the crit­i­cally-ac­claimed Show­time se­ries “Ray Dono­van”, Schreiber, who rarely grants one-on-one type in­ter­views, will speak about his ca­reer and his many past per­for­mances that prompted the New York Times to pro­claim him as “the finest Amer­i­can theater ac­tor of his gen­er­a­tion.” For more in­for­ma­tion, or to pur­chase tick­ets, go to www.fed­er­a­tioncja.org.


On Novem­ber 12, the Shield of Athena Fam­ily Ser­vices or­ga­ni­za­tion, which has pro­vided much needed ser­vices to women and chil­dren who suf­fer do­mes­tic abuse and fam­ily vi­o­lence since 1991, will hold its 23rd an­nual Art Auc­tion at Le 1000, lo­cated at 1000 de la Gauchetiere Street, start­ing at 3 p.m.

Held un­der the pa­tron­age of Dr. Stavroula Christopou­los and Dr.An­dreas Niko­lis, and hosted by Eramelinda Bo­quer from CJAD and Elias Makos from Break­fast Tele­vi­sion, the auc­tion will fea­ture var­i­ous artis­tic works by 32 ta­lented artists that will be up for sale. Pro­ceeds from the auc­tion will ben­e­fit the Shield of Athena in its mission to aid vic­tims of fam­ily vi­o­lence, as well as to­wards the es­tab­lish­ment of a sec­ond Step Hous­ing Re­source tran­si­tion home, which give vic­tims a chance to re­cover and work to­wards build­ing a safer and peace­ful fu­ture for them­selves. As well, a spe­cial pre­sen­ta­tion will be made at the auc­tion in honour of Avon Canada, which do­nated a brand new ve­hi­cle to the Shield after their van was stolen this past March, and for their gen­er­ous do­na­tion of skin care prod­ucts for the res­i­dents of the Shield’s shel­ter. With the Christ­mas hol­i­day sea­son now upon us, here are some lo­cal Yuletide-re­lated shows that are not to be missed.

The McGill Cham­ber Orches­tra, un­der the di­rec­tion of Boris Brott, will present three spe­cial shows of sa­cred Christ­mas mu­sic.There will be a per­for­mance of Han­del’s Mes­siah on Novem­ber 30, 7:30 p.m., at the Church of St. An­drew & St. Paul (3415 Red­path Street); De­cem­ber 1 will see a per­for­mance of “La Res­ur­rec­tion de Mon­sieur Han­del” fea­tur­ing ac­tor Luc Guerin at the St. Jean Bap­tiste Church (4237 Henri Julien Av­enue) start­ing at 7:30 p.m.; and on De­cem­ber 2, a Christ­mas con­cert with tenor Marc Hervieux, so­prano Sharon Azrieli and the St. Lawrence Choir will take place at the historic Notre Dame Basil­ica start­ing at 7:30 p.m.Tick­ets for each show start at $20 and can be pur­chased on­line at www.or­chestre.ca or by call­ing 514-487-5190.

The Lyric Theatre Singers, un­der the di­rec­tion of Bob Bach­e­lor, will once again present a highly en­ter­tain­ing con­cert filled with plenty of Christ­mas car­ols, stan­dards and rare gems from the hol­i­day sea­son with “Can­dle­light Christ­mas 2017” for four per­for­mances from De­cem­ber 7 to 10 at the Loy­ola Chapel of Con­cor­dia Univer­sity, lo­cated at 7141 Sher­brooke Street West.
