Millar named Warriors GM
MOOSE JAWG CHARITY ROAD RACE in support of the Moose Jaw Health Foundation will be held Sunday, July 1 in Wakamow Valley with a 5 km and 10 km route in addition to a route for youngsters. Races begin at 8 a.m. In the past 10 years the race has raised more than $53,000 for the health foundation. Casino Moose Jaw is again the main sponsor, providing $7,500 to the event. EYEBROW FAIR begins Saturday, July 7 with a pancake breakfast at 8 a.m., horse show beginning at 9 a.m. and continuing through the day, and a display of household arts entries at noon with a penny parade and silent auction. Slo-pitch begins at 10 a.m. Pete and Ruth Gorda will entertain at 11 a.m. Concessions will be open throughout the day and a supper will take place at 5 p.m. EARLY BIRD LIONS DUCK DERBY will be held Sunday, July 8 at the serpentine in Crescent Park. Ducks will be released at 2 p.m., with prizes awarded for the best performing ducks. The derby is an annual project of the Early Bird Lions Club. MOOSE JAW MOTIF, the 38th annual multicultural festival, takes place July 13-15 in Happy Valley Park located off Oak Street and Sixth Avenue Northeast. Hours of operation will be Friday, July 13 from 3 to 10 p.m.; Saturday, July 14 from 1 to 10 p.m.; and Sunday, July 15 from 1 to 7 p.m. The weekend will include ethnic displays, food booths, entertainment and the children’s cultural program. SENIORS SLO-PITCH LEAGUE practices are held Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. in Moose Jaw. Games are at 5:30 p.m. versus Saskatoon in Davidson. Thursday games are at 5:30 p.m. versus Regina, alternating between Moose Jaw and Regina. Games are for players 55 years and older and more players are always welcome. Alan Millar has been drafted to a new position with the Moose Jaw Warriors.
Warriors’ President Chad Taylor announced last week that Millar is now the club’s general manager, with a multi-year contract extension. Millar just completed his second season as the club’s director of hockey operations.
“On behalf of the Warriors’ board of directors, we are very pleased with Alan’s direction of the hockey club and his commitment to the Warriors and the City of Moose Jaw,” Taylor said in a news release. “We are very fortunate to have such an experienced hockey executive leading our franchise,” Taylor said.
Taylor also announced that Corey Nyhagen, the director of business operations has been signed to a new multi-year agreement.
“We look forward to Corey’s continued leadership of our business team,” said Millar.
Nyhagen is entering his fourth year with the Warriors in his current position and prior to that was the director of sales and marketing for one season.
He led the club to the WHL’s business and marketing award this year and was instrumental in the team’s move into Mosaic Place last year.
The Warriors’ pre-season will open with a rookie game Aug. 28 at 7 p.m. against Swift Current at Mosaic Place. A special exhibition game against the Broncos is planned for Sept. 7 in Maple Creek. Swift Current then comes to Moose Jaw for a game on Sept. 9 at 2 p.m. Moose Jaw plays an exhibition game Sept. 14 in Brandon and Brandon will be in Moose Jaw Sept. 15 at 7 p.m.
The 2012-13 regular season schedule will be announced this week.
