Vanier wins junior boys volleyball title
Vikings cap off impressive season in style with straight-sets victory over Central
Take a handful of raw athleticsm, throw in some solid skills and sprinkle in just a bit of an edge and you have the making of a city champion in any sport.
So it came as no suprise when the Vanier Vikings used those three facets perfectly on their way to claiming the Moose Jaw high school junior boys city championship Monday at Vanier.
The Vikings defeated the Central Cyclones in straight sets 25-19, 25-15 to claim the title.
“The boys played fantastic,” said coach Ryan Turberfield. “We knew we were off when Ryann Cabral hit that one straight down and then our boys just went from there. That kind of set the tone and erupted us and we played extremely well.
“We had a tough opponent tonight, we have a lot of respect for Central, and whoever we were going to play in the final was going to be tough. We were fortunate enough to have a lot of Grade 10s with us this year, we have eight Grade 10s, and it’s a combination of the practices we had last year and the success we had last year paying off.”
The Vikings showed off a blistering front row attack highlighted by a handful of players demonstrating impressive verticality, leading to plenty of solid kills. That was all part of the plan all season, said Turberfield.
“I’d like to take credit for (players leaping ability), but I think that’s all genetics there,” he said with a laugh. “We’re really fortunate to have some boys who can really lift off and get really high. That’s something we preached all year, ball up and balls down, we want to play a mean and intimidating game. You can tip in junior ball and get some points that way, but the fundamentals are important and hitting is huge in senior ball, so that’s what we’ve been working on all year.”
In addition to showing they were the best team in the league this year, the win also indicates how bright the future is for Vanier volleyball when it comes to the senior ranks.
“These guys are a tight group, they’re a great group of young men and I know they’re going to do great things for Vanier and volleyball in Moose Jaw going forward,” Turberfield said.
