Not all bad news for pro­duc­ers

Lewis added that he was not all that en­cour­aged by some of the pro­pos­als and de­mands com­ing out of the ne­go­ti­a­tions.

“The dis­pute-res­o­lu­tion process, that doesn’t sound very pos­i­tive ei­ther. I don’t think any­one would sign on to an agree­ment, where the dis­pute is de­cided in an Amer­i­can court,” he said.

Lewis also had con­cerns about the pos­si­bil­ity of a NAFTA deal hav­ing a time limit.

“To say it’s only go­ing to last five years, all these trade deals his­tor­i­cally have been open ended and can be open to rene­go­ti­a­tion. But to put an end point on a deal like this is pretty dif­fi­cult,” he said.

It was not all bad news on the trade front for pro­duc­ers, ac­cord­ing to Lewis, as it is pos­si­ble the Trans Pa­cific Part­ner­ship (TPP) may go for­ward with 11 coun­tries sign­ing on. The TTP was a trade agree­ment that orig­i­nally
