The herd of woodland caribou that live on the Slate Islands are descendants of animals that migrated across Lake Superior in 1907 using an eightmile-long ice bridge.
The Slate Island Lighthouse was built in 1903. It’s located on Patterson Island, one of the two main land masses.
The first lighthouse keeper, Peter King, hailed from Port Arthur, Ont., and brought his wife and three sons with him to the Slate Islands. His salary was $400 a year.
The Slate Islands were designated an Ontario Natural Environment Provincial Park in 1985.
