The Celebration Continues
Happy Canada Day, everyone! Thanks to your steady flow of submissions, our tribute to Canada’s 150th anniversary, which was kicked into high gear in the June-july issue of Our Canada, is rolling ever onwards in this issue of More! Beginning on page 16, you’ll find another wide-ranging selection of your “Coming to Canada” stories, each of which reflects another unique facet of our nation’s vast cultural make-up.
We’re also pleased to be able to celebrate Montreal’s 375th anniversary with you. In her photo essay, beginning on page 8, contributor Maryse Loranger shares the sense of history and current realities she encountered in Montreal, one of Canada’s earliest settlements and now one of our nation’s most vibrant cosmopolitan centres.
If you like the look of this issue’s cover, featuring a photo-inspired painting by Brandy Saturley of Victoria, you’re sure to enjoy Brandy’s Our Travels story on page 28, where she shares her personal and artistic journey of discovery in Yellowknife, which took place last year around Canada Day.
Every now and then a submission arrives at Our Canada that reminds us of the fact that people may well indeed leave their hometown, but their hometown never fully leaves them. Such is the case for Julia Shears, currently of Thunder Bay, who tells us what makes her hometown of Rocky Harbour, N.L., so very special (page 38).
Last but not least, our annual Share Your Canada photo contest is in full swing. See page 67 for details—with $1,000 in cash prizes to be awarded, it just might be worth your while to enter! Gary George, gary_ george@ rd. com
