A mama robin chooses an unusual spot to build a nest and have her babies

From industrious robins to elegant hummingbirds, these contributors capture them all!

Last summer, a robin built a nest up near the ceiling of our garage, on the garage door opener. It was so high up we couldn’t reach the twigs to remove them before the nest was built and then it was too late. Once we realized there were eggs in the nest, we became fixated on following their progress. After the baby robins hatched, we left the garage door open as often as possible to allow the mother and father to go in and out freely to feed their babies. We’d take our lunch out to the garage and watch the activity while we ate. It was great to see the babies getting bigger every day. Although I can’t say we’d allow another nest to be built in our garage, it was a nice experience this time. My husband joked that we should hang a sign on the garage door that says “No Vacancy!” ■
