Historical accuracy

- Patrick MacKinnon, Halifax

Re: Halifax grapples with colonial past, April 25 After reading this reminder of the career of Lord Edward Cornwallis I am inclined to agree with those who argue for retention of the statue on the grounds of historical accuracy.

But let us indeed insist on complete historical accuracy. Let us leave the statue up but affix a brass plate with a few historically accurate details: “Cornwallis was a British officer who committed crimes against humanity that today would be considered war crimes.

This statue was erected in times that did not fully recognize the enormity of his conduct but it is left up in order that historical accuracy may be retained and is not preserved to in any way honour his inhumanity.”
