BOTTLE OF WINE FETCHES US$350,000 AT AUCTION
An unassuming 750-mL bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon has set a serious record. The Setting recently sold for US$350,000, making it the most expensive bottle of wine ever auctioned, according to the Emeril Lagasse Foundation. “Winemaker to the stars” Jesse Katz created the 2015 vintage especially for Hollywood agent Shep Gordon. Gordon, the subject of Mike Myers’ 2013 documentary Supermensch, donated the bottle to chef Emeril Lagasse’s annual charity wine auction, Carnivale du Vin. According to The Drinks Business, the fact that it was the sole bottle available for purchase only added to its allure as a collector’s item. Proceeds from the auction went to non-profit youth education organizations. A private collector from Mississippi reportedly chipped in with a group of friends to buy the bottle.
