Pad­dlers shine in Ot­tawa

Top racers at Rideau Club re­gional re­gatta qual­i­fied for provin­cials and na­tion­als

Nu­mer­ous North Bay Ca­noe Club ath­letes qual­i­fied for pro­vin­cial and na­tional cham­pi­onships af­ter com­pet­ing in the Eastern On­tario Di­vi­sion Qual­i­fy­ing Re­gatta in Ot­tawa on the week­end.

The North Bay Ca­noe Club com­peted in the Eastern On­tario Di­vi­sion Qual­i­fy­ing Re­gatta held at Rideau Ca­noe Club in Ot­tawa this past week­end.

Max Ker­ri­gan’s per­for­mances at the Rideau Ca­noe Club booked his first ticket to the Ca­noe-Kayak Canada Na­tional Cham­pi­onships, held this year in Wel­land, ON three weeks from now Aug. 22-26.

Ker­ri­gan was top racer in U16 Men’s K1 200-me­tre fi­nal and fin­ished fourth in U16 Men’s K1-1000 m event.

A strong per­for­mance also came from Daniel McColm fin­ish­ing sixth in the K1 200m event, just short of na­tional qual­i­fi­ca­tion. Club coach Sean Pat­ter­son also qual­i­fied for the na­tion­als in U19 Mens C1 200m and part­nered with club head coach Zach Pecore to qual­ify for Ju­nior Men’s C2 200m cham­pi­onship. McColm will con­tinue to the provin­cials.

North Bay ath­letes in U13 and U15 age groups also com­peted for qual­i­fi­ca­tion to the On­tario Pro­vin­cial Cham­pi­onships (OCUP3) Aug. 12. A high­light of the day in­cluded see­ing North Bay’s Syd­ney Doidge, Avery Durocher and Grace Hong each win their heats in U13 K1. All three qual­i­fied in mul­ti­ple ca­noe and kayak events. Max Hong also had a no­table per­for­mance, qual­i­fy­ing with the fastest time of all com­peti­tors in U14 Men’s C1 1,000-m race.

Ath­letes that qual­i­fied to com­pete at the provin­cials are: Greg Hill, Alex Jes­sup, Adam Lav­i­gne, Erik Bonnell, Gwyneth Durocher, Is­abella Brother­ston, Syd­ney Doidge, Avery Durocher, Grace Hong and Max Hong. All will be com­pet­ing in mul­ti­ple ca­noe and kayak sin­gles and crew events.

“Great re­sults were also seen by some of our new­est ath­letes Jack Bonnell, Lukas Bonnell, Char­lie Brother­ston and Paige Gart­ner in their first at­tempt at qual­i­fy­ing for the Pro­vin­cial Cham­pi­onship,” said North Bay Ca­noe Club Com­modore Ed Hong. “All will be com­pet­ing in the U15 Mixed War Ca­noe event.”

“Con­grat­u­la­tions also go to ath­letes new to com­pet­i­tive pad­dling for their out­stand­ing re­sults at di­vi­sional re­gat­tas in North Bay and Car­leton Place ear­lier this sum­mer,” Hong said. Among this team are: Caitlin Gal­lardi, Dy­lan Clowa­ter, Keira Cot­ter, Jack Mur­ray, Olivia Gal­lardi, Nathan Clowa­ter, Wes Clouthier, So­phie Durocher, El­lie McClel­land, Kiana Jack­son, Austin Wright and Ja­cob Cork­ish.
