Paddlers shine in Ottawa
Top racers at Rideau Club regional regatta qualified for provincials and nationals
Numerous North Bay Canoe Club athletes qualified for provincial and national championships after competing in the Eastern Ontario Division Qualifying Regatta in Ottawa on the weekend.
The North Bay Canoe Club competed in the Eastern Ontario Division Qualifying Regatta held at Rideau Canoe Club in Ottawa this past weekend.
Max Kerrigan’s performances at the Rideau Canoe Club booked his first ticket to the Canoe-Kayak Canada National Championships, held this year in Welland, ON three weeks from now Aug. 22-26.
Kerrigan was top racer in U16 Men’s K1 200-metre final and finished fourth in U16 Men’s K1-1000 m event.
A strong performance also came from Daniel McColm finishing sixth in the K1 200m event, just short of national qualification. Club coach Sean Patterson also qualified for the nationals in U19 Mens C1 200m and partnered with club head coach Zach Pecore to qualify for Junior Men’s C2 200m championship. McColm will continue to the provincials.
North Bay athletes in U13 and U15 age groups also competed for qualification to the Ontario Provincial Championships (OCUP3) Aug. 12. A highlight of the day included seeing North Bay’s Sydney Doidge, Avery Durocher and Grace Hong each win their heats in U13 K1. All three qualified in multiple canoe and kayak events. Max Hong also had a notable performance, qualifying with the fastest time of all competitors in U14 Men’s C1 1,000-m race.
Athletes that qualified to compete at the provincials are: Greg Hill, Alex Jessup, Adam Lavigne, Erik Bonnell, Gwyneth Durocher, Isabella Brotherston, Sydney Doidge, Avery Durocher, Grace Hong and Max Hong. All will be competing in multiple canoe and kayak singles and crew events.
“Great results were also seen by some of our newest athletes Jack Bonnell, Lukas Bonnell, Charlie Brotherston and Paige Gartner in their first attempt at qualifying for the Provincial Championship,” said North Bay Canoe Club Commodore Ed Hong. “All will be competing in the U15 Mixed War Canoe event.”
“Congratulations also go to athletes new to competitive paddling for their outstanding results at divisional regattas in North Bay and Carleton Place earlier this summer,” Hong said. Among this team are: Caitlin Gallardi, Dylan Clowater, Keira Cotter, Jack Murray, Olivia Gallardi, Nathan Clowater, Wes Clouthier, Sophie Durocher, Ellie McClelland, Kiana Jackson, Austin Wright and Jacob Corkish.
