What about students’ safety?

North Bay Nugget - - OPINION -

to the editor: With the annual influx of students, it’s amazing the speed in which council passed judgement on the Main/Cassells Street scenario, deciding to have a four-way stop installed within a matter of a few weeks, all in the name of safety. I guess it helps that a councillor fell victim to a crunched fender. thankfully no one was injured.

I was wondering if anyone on council remembers the number 1155? If you don’t, you will remember in a few paragraphs.

I read recently in a toronto paper of what happened recently, where a private citizen built some stairs in a park for the elderly to access some local gardens and immediately had them torn down because they didn’t meet the building code. they were built without a permit and came in well under the figure quoted to the city.

I’m thinking we need the same scenario here in North Bay. I’m tempted to dig out my cement mixer and generator, and visit a local building store to see if they’d care to donate some cement. I have a similar project in mind.

Back in February, the community raised cane about a real problem with safety.

It did not concern a councillor’s fenders. It involved extreme danger to our citizens who require city transit to get around.

the number 1155 is the number of the bus stop on McKeown avenue where Coun. Mark King declared that action would be taken as soon as possible to have a sidewalk installed on the south side of McKeown so people would not have to stand in the middle of the road waiting for a bus.

I went by there yesterday. all I see is lovely grass. In four short months, there will be snowbanks there.

When is someone on council going to address real safety concerns and get the damn sidewalk built? the summer is half over. a four-way stop can be installed in a couple of weeks to save a few fenders, so how long does it take to build a sidewalk?

In the past few months, this council has been more worried with the speed limit on anita avenue to appease some welloff families and a four-way stop downtown to slow down traffic for DIA members.

Would someone please get off their butts and address a real problem? hundreds, if not thousands, of students walk down McKeown avenue every day during the winter. how about looking out for their safety. they bring in more money than tourists bring to Main Street
