Caters to people with developmental disabilities “of all levels and needs”

North Bay Nugget - - NEWS -

there is no location selected yet, but an office of the adult enrichment Centre is expected to be open in north bay by nov. 1.

the centre – it has three locations in sudbury and one in sault ste. marie – provides programs and services for those with developmental disabilities “of all levels and needs.”

the centre offers day programs for young graduates who are no longer in the school system.

“When they graduate, there is not much available for them,” Joanne bouchard, the founding director, said this week.

“It allows young adults to take the next step in their lives.”

the adult enrichment Centre was founded in sudbury in 2014. as well as north bay, another location is being planned for timmins.

the centre, according to area manager ashley roberts, offers basic care, specialized one-on-one care, one-on-one care and complex care.

“our programs offer support with developing new skills, enhancing skills, building independence, building job-readiness skills and volunteering within the community.”

bouchard said the centre has worked out a partnership with the YMCA, similar to relationships developed with the YMCA in sudbury and sault ste. marie.

she said there are about 120 people on a wait list in north bay for programming.

“there will be no wait list,” bouchard said. “It will be firstcome, first-served . . . and our hope is to be able to service the whole amount.”

the centre also intends to provide behavioural supports, speech programming and occupational therapy, and physiotherapy.

home-based life skills programming will also be offered at the centre. that programming will include life skills such as cleaning, cooking and budgeting.

roberts said she was not sure how many people would have to be hired, but all staff will be qualified dsws, ssws, physiotherapists or occupational therapist assistants or related fields.
