Date set for arena meeting
A public consultation session regarding the replacement of West Ferris arena is planned for Sept. 27.
The date was selected Wednesday by a special committee of council heading up the consultation process.
Coun. Daryl Vaillancourt, who is among four councillors serving on the committee, will oversee the session.
“It’s very important that we hear what people have to say,” said Vaillancourt, noting the time and location of the meeting will be announced soon.
He said city staff is expected to provide the public with background information and an update of the current status of the proposed project during the session followed by comments from the public.
Although the committee is looking for input regarding the location, size and scope of the proposed new arena, Vaillancourt noted that the process isn’t starting from scratch.
“I don’t want us to rewrite the MURF (multi-use recreational facilities) study,” he said, noting the document which was completed in 2013 includes some thorough and detailed information about the community’s needs.
Problems with the roof at the West Ferris arena, coupled with other condition issues, have led to a recommendation that a new facility with at least one ice pad be in place by the fall of 2019.
