Hockey dad objects to $353 ticket

North Bay Nugget - - OPINION -

To the editor:

Thank you for a wonderful weekend at the Ice boltz hockey tournament on Nov. 3-5. Two consecutive years my daughter’s team made it through to the finals... and successfully we won this year.

The venues, friendliness and competition have been fantastic and I would advocate this tournament to anyone who is looking and/or hasn’t visited North bay.

Two consecutive years we’ve left your fine city late in the day. Luckily, last year I drove with a police officer who did all the driving.

This year it was my turn to take the wheel. I got pulled over only 20 minutes or so from leaving North bay by an ontario Provincial Police officer. I won’t advocate my total innocence of speeding, but would argue that I was travelling with the normal flow of traffic, not passing and adjusting with traffic as required.

To hear that another father was also pulled over in the same area, I begin to grow suspicious. Considering we travel, by and large, as a convoy having left roughly same time, the comments and feedback from other parents are to hard to ignore.

Considering I drive for a living to Toronto weekly and have never been assessed a speeding ticket or threatened with stunt driving is baffling.

To have it suggested I was doing almost 50 km/h over the limit, threaten to have my licence taken away and have the vehicle ceased put me in a vulnerable position on the side of a dark ontario highway more than 400 kilometres from my house.

The cost of gas each way, a night in a hotel, time off work (again) - it was cheaper to pay the ticket and move on. I wanted to express my opinion and concern as this could impact my involvement and/or desire to come back to this tournament and your city in general.

If I didn’t have three daughters in five tournaments in the month of November, I certainly would have exercised my right to defend myself. I simply don’t have the budget or time, so the lesser evil was to pay the fine of $353 plus $3 processing fee.
