Bears spot­ted near school

There have been a cou­ple of re­ported bear sight­ings near Vincent Massey Pub­lic School this week.

School staff con­tacted the North Bay-mat­tawa Con­ser­va­tion Author­ity Wed­nes­day morn­ing af­ter a black bear cub was spot­ted Tues­day night and again Wed­nes­day morn­ing at about 8 a.m. at the el­e­men­tary school, lo­cated ad­ja­cent to the trail­head at Lau­ren­tian es­carp­ment Con­ser­va­tion Area on Janey Av­enue.

A sign has been erected at the trail­head and will re­main there for 72 hours ad­vis­ing those us­ing the trails of the bear sight­ing.

Bear sight­ings are nor­mal for this time of year as the tree nuts are avail­able and bears be­gin for­ag­ing in prepa­ra­tion for their win­ter hi­ber­na­tion.
