Voodoos win sixth straight

POWASSAN, Ont. – The surg­ing Powassan Voodoos skated to their sixth con­sec­u­tive North­ern On­tario Ju­nior Hockey League vic­tory Fri­day as they came back with an­other strong fi­nal frame to de­feat the Tim­mins Rock 3-1 at the Powassan Sport­splex.

Tim­mins tal­lied first in this one as Owen Shier picked up his sec­ond of the sea­son nearly six min­utes into the con­test.

Nei­ther side would con­nect in a score­less mid­dle stanza as the Rock car­ried their one-goal cush­ion into the third.

In the fi­nal frame, as was the case Thurs­day when the Voodoos trailed by one en­ter­ing the last stanza, they came back with a trio of unan­swered tal­lies to keep their win­ning streak in­tact.

Dry­den Rivet drew Powassan level 5:42 into the third to knot the af­fair at 1-1.

It stayed tied deep into reg­u­la­tion when Henry Scott sup­plied the even­tual game-win­ner with 3:01 to go.

Rico Rossi then se­cured the de­ci­sion with an empty-net­ter in the fi­nal minute as he scored for a sec­ond straight out­ing and ex­tended a point streak to five.

Powassan af­fil­i­ate Sam Gara­gan had two as­sists in the home side’s tri­umph.

Chris­tian Ci­cigoi made 19 stops to win his fifth straight start for the Voodoos while Tyler Master­nak faced 29 at­tempts in de­feat for Tim­mins.

Voodoos rally in 3rd to de­feat Rapids

The Powassan Voodoos erased a one-goal deficit by notch­ing three unan­swered third-pe­riod mark­ers to pull out a 4-2 vic­tory over the French River Rapids Thurs­day evening in North­ern On­tario Ju­nior Hockey League ac­tion at the Powassan Sport­splex.

En­ter­ing the con­test hav­ing gone 2-0-1 in their past three out­ings, French River got off to a solid start once again by get on the board first as Will Frustaglio made it 1-0 mid­way through the night’s ini­tial pe­riod as he col­lected his ninth tally of the cam­paign.

A late man ad­van­tage helped the Voodoos draw level be­fore the frame came to a close as To­mas Yachmenev tied it dur­ing the power play at 18:58.

Up a skater in the sec­ond helped the Rapids go back on top with Frustaglio con­nect­ing once more to give him 10 over­all at 4:46.

Mov­ing on to the third, Powassan lev­elled the pro­ceed­ings once again cour­tesy on Rico Rossi’s first NOJHL goal at 2:12, dur­ing an­other power play chance.

Spe­cial teams were preva­lent yet again with Ryan Mills pick­ing up the even­tual game-win­ner dur­ing a man ad­van­tage with less than five min­utes left in reg­u­la­tion.

The Voodoos then se­cured the home win in the late go­ing as Brett Shawana put one into an empty net at 19:01 to wrap things up of­fen­sively.

Chris­tian Ci­cigoi made 26 saves to earn the tri­umph in his fourth straight start and his club’s fifth in suc­ces­sion.

Mar­shall Frap­pier faced 38 shots against in the nar­row set­back for French River.
