Miners take on Crunch twice this weekend

Northern News (Kirkland Lake) - - SPORTS -

After starting the season with a split last weekend, the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners are back on the ice tonight.

The Miners are up in Cochrane for the first of a home-and-home. Head Coach Ryan Wood stated it has been a good week of practices. He said they are continuing to work on the defensive side of the game. He feels it is very important to be defensively sound and taking care of their end of the ice is the most important priority.

The two teams met in the Polar Bear Classic pre-season tournament. Wood says the Crunch is a good skating team that likes to stretch the ice. He points out his players will have to make sure that Cochrane doesn’t get behind them.

In terms of goaltending, Wood has not made a definitive choice but seems to be leaning towards starting Ryan Winter for tonight’s contest. Last weekend Winter posted a 3-0 shut out against French River, stopping all 24 saves that he faced.

In terms of the injury front goalie Jesse Hodgson skated this week but a date for his return has not been determined. Tonight’s game is slated for a 7:30 start at the Tim Horton Events Center. Saturday’s game at The Joe goes at 7 p.m.
