For a team that al­most never made it to the ju­nior high volleyball tour­na­ment in Rod­dick­ton-Bide Arm late last month, com­ing home with a cham­pi­onship ban­ner was a sur­pris­ing feat.

“I thought it was cool that we won,” player Kate­lynn Rus­sell said. “It’s our first ban­ner in a long time.

The Mary Simms All Grade team, which con­sisted of eight play­ers — seven were ju­nior high stu­dents, and one was an el­e­men­tary stu­dent — were the un­der­dog head­ing into the com­pe­ti­tion. See SCHOOL, A2
