Flower’s Cove hosts Bad­minton Provin­cials

FLOWER’S COVE, NL – The home­town Flower’s Cove team fell just short of the cham­pi­onship at the SSNL Bad­minton Provin­cials.

Canon Richards Me­mo­rial Academy was de­feated by Dorset Col­le­giate of Pil­ley’s Is­land in the fi­nal by a score of 4-1. Both teams were un­de­feated in the tour­na­ment en­ter­ing the fi­nal match.

The team tour­na­ment was held May 11-12 at Canon Richards, with a ban­quet on May 13 and in­di­vid­ual events tak­ing place May 14.

Ten teams par­tic­i­pated in the team com­pe­ti­tion and 16 in in­di­vid­ual events. Two teams came from south­ern Labrador, with Abi­gail Poole of St. Lewis Academy win­ning gold in the Girls Sin­gles con­test and Wil­liam Gil­lett of Char­lot­te­town fin­ish­ing eighth in the team tour­na­ment.

In in­di­vid­ual events, Zack Ap­plin and Alyson Moores of Canon Richards took home gold in the mixed dou­bles event. Ap­plin also won an in­di­vid­ual sports­man­ship award.

Tour­na­ment con­vener Tony Power ex­tended ap­pre­ci­a­tion to all the staff, par­ents and com­mu­nity mem­bers who helped make the tour­na­ment a suc­cess.
