Flower’s Cove hosts Badminton Provincials
FLOWER’S COVE, NL – The hometown Flower’s Cove team fell just short of the championship at the SSNL Badminton Provincials.
Canon Richards Memorial Academy was defeated by Dorset Collegiate of Pilley’s Island in the final by a score of 4-1. Both teams were undefeated in the tournament entering the final match.
The team tournament was held May 11-12 at Canon Richards, with a banquet on May 13 and individual events taking place May 14.
Ten teams participated in the team competition and 16 in individual events. Two teams came from southern Labrador, with Abigail Poole of St. Lewis Academy winning gold in the Girls Singles contest and William Gillett of Charlottetown finishing eighth in the team tournament.
In individual events, Zack Applin and Alyson Moores of Canon Richards took home gold in the mixed doubles event. Applin also won an individual sportsmanship award.
Tournament convener Tony Power extended appreciation to all the staff, parents and community members who helped make the tournament a success.
