ST. ANTHONY, NL – St. Anthony-based paediatrician Ahmed Mohamed Abaza has pled not guilty to five charges of assault and three charges of assault with a weapon or imitation.

He has been ordered by the court to not make contact with the victim, except through a lawyer. His plea in court was conducted on Tuesday, Oct. 3, and a variation took place Oct. 4.

In the variation, Abaza has been allotted conditions that allow him to leave the province but not without first informing the police before he leaves and returns.

In an emailed response from Labrador-Grenfell Health (LGH), CEO Barbara Blake said that LGH is aware a member of its staff has been charged with criminal offences, but the Health Authority has determined that the charges are associated with a private and personal matter.

In the response, Blake says the charges “have no bearing or impact on the performance of the employee’s duties and responsibilities.”

Abaza’s next court appearance is scheduled for April 8, 2018, in St. Anthony.

LGH will continue to monitor the process of the provincial court proceedings.
