Sheila Fitzger­ald new in­com­ing vice-pres­i­dent of MNL


Rod­dick­ton-Bide Arm mayor Sheila Fitzger­ald has been named in­com­ing vice-pres­i­dent of Mu­nic­i­pal­i­ties New­found­land and Labrador (MNL).

Fitzger­ald was elected to the po­si­tion by ac­cla­ma­tion af­ter an­other can­di­date stepped aside on Oct 11. She had pre­vi­ously served as the small towns di­rec­tor on the board.

Fitzger­ald was also appointed to the Fed­er­a­tion of Cana­dian Mu­nic­i­pal­i­ties Green Mu­nic­i­pal Fund Coun­cil in April and was re-elected as Rod­dick­ton-Bide mayor in Septem­ber.

Fitzger­ald sees a num­ber of op­por­tu­ni­ties as she as­sumes her new po­si­tion with MFNL.

She says its an op­por­tu­nity “to meet, work and net­work with com­mu­nity lead­ers through­out the province; to hear what’s work­ing well in com­mu­ni­ties of all sizes through­out the province and what’s not; to make strong con­nec­tions with pro­vin­cial part­ners; to pro­mote the North­ern Penin­sula and the province; to ad­vo­cate for the best in­ter­ests, ser­vices, pro­grams and in­fra­struc­ture needs for all com­mu­ni­ties in the province; and to work with strong a strong com­mu­nity-minded team of com­mu­nity lead­ers, on the board, with a sim­i­lar vi­sion for their com­mu­ni­ties and fu­ture of the province.”

Fitzger­ald be­lieves with changes com­ing to the Mu­nic­i­pal­i­ties Act, im­ple­men­ta­tion of waste­water reg­u­la­tions, and re­gional gov­er­nance, they need strong com­mu­nity lead­ers now more than ever.

“Change is com­ing, the time is now and we need to not fear the fu­ture but to shape it,” she said.

“I am ex­cited and look­ing for­ward to work­ing with pres­i­dent Tony Keats and a great team of strong com­mu­nity lead­ers who share a strong vi­sion for a strong fu­ture.”
