Sheila Fitzgerald new incoming vice-president of MNL
Roddickton-Bide Arm mayor Sheila Fitzgerald has been named incoming vice-president of Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador (MNL).
Fitzgerald was elected to the position by acclamation after another candidate stepped aside on Oct 11. She had previously served as the small towns director on the board.
Fitzgerald was also appointed to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities Green Municipal Fund Council in April and was re-elected as Roddickton-Bide mayor in September.
Fitzgerald sees a number of opportunities as she assumes her new position with MFNL.
She says its an opportunity “to meet, work and network with community leaders throughout the province; to hear what’s working well in communities of all sizes throughout the province and what’s not; to make strong connections with provincial partners; to promote the Northern Peninsula and the province; to advocate for the best interests, services, programs and infrastructure needs for all communities in the province; and to work with strong a strong community-minded team of community leaders, on the board, with a similar vision for their communities and future of the province.”
Fitzgerald believes with changes coming to the Municipalities Act, implementation of wastewater regulations, and regional governance, they need strong community leaders now more than ever.
“Change is coming, the time is now and we need to not fear the future but to shape it,” she said.
“I am excited and looking forward to working with president Tony Keats and a great team of strong community leaders who share a strong vision for a strong future.”
