WEST NORTHUMBERLAND — A Cobourg-based doctor has received significant recognition from her peers.

Dr. Kathleen Barnard-Thompson is a 2017 recipient of the Ontario College of Family Physicians Regional Family Physician of the Year Award.

“I am honoured to be recognized by my colleagues who are equally deserving of recognition for their tireless work to create a community of caring in Northumberland, Dr. Barnard-Thompson said when asked for her comment on the award.

She is one of the doctors at the Northumberland Family Health Team office in Northumberland Mall and executive director Laurel Savoy congratulated Barnard-Thompson on her “welldeserved award.

“All of us at Northumberland Family Health Team are very proud to work alongside Dr. Barnard-Thompson in the delivery of interdisciplinary patientcentred care.”

A media release from the Ontario College of Family Physicians states this about the nomination, and the award presentation that is slated for Nov. 23 in Toronto: “Nominated by their peers, the award is presented annually to seven Ontario family doctors – one from each region of the province – who provide exemplary care to their patients and are passionately involved in activities that contribute to excellence in family medicine.”

Well-known local physician Dr. Mark Essak, past chair and lead physician of the Northumberland Family Health Team, stated in a media release that “Dr. BarnardThompson serves her patients tirelessly. She is a great role model for our community and region, showing new grads how one should be a complete family doctor.”

She was part of group creating the local family health team in Cobourg.

The release states further that Dr. Barnard-Thompson is “department chief, Maternal Child Services at the Northumberland Hills Hospital, she is a strong supporter and advocate for the “MoreOB” performance improvement program within the obstetrical unit, and a member of the Medical Advisory Committee.”

It also notes that “throughout her 12-year medical career, BarnardThompson has provided the full scope of family practice care - in family medicine clinics, in the emergency department, in nursing homes, in hospital wards, and in obstetrical and newborn care.

Described as ‘striking a perfect balance between autonomy and supervision’, she is a valued resource to the residents she teaches at the University of Toronto and Queens University. She was (previously) recognized for her outstanding work in medical education in 2015, when she was one of two doctors to win the Rural Ontario Medical Program Preceptor of the Year Award.”
