Dorset Collegiate claims team table tennis championship and sweep individual titles
Dorset Collegiate claimed its third straight provincial table tennis team championship this weekend, and swept all individual titles for the first time.
The student athletes from Pilley’s Island have established themselves as table tennis powerhouses in this province. However, the most recent feat was something beyond even what the players and coach could have hoped for.
In the team event, Dorset players went 30-0 in the competition Friday. Saturday, only the mixed doubles team suffered a defeat — a round robin loss to a duo out of Jens Haven Memorial in Nain — in the individual competition, finishing 29-1.
Brianna Warren won the girls singles and teamed up with Sarah Warren to win girls doubles. The Grade 11 student also claimed her third straight provincial singles title.
“I had hoped to win,” the daughter of coach Mark Warren said. “I felt pretty good going into it.”
Warren never took the field lightly, despite constant success throughout the year and being the back-to-back defending girls champion. She said she was challenged in the competition, and needed her A game to win.
“Everything went well,” she said. “I love meeting new people.”
Ty Winsor duplicated the feat in the boys competition, claiming the singles title and teaming up with Harley Elliott to win the doubles title. The Grade 9 student bettered two previous silver medals to win his first singles title.
“I went in just hoping to do my best,” he said. “I beat a couple of the good people there, and then I thought I could go to the finals. I just kept my head up and managed to get it.”
After losing to some of the same competitors earlier in the year, Winsor said he practiced a lot throughout the year. Still just of junior high age, he said the key to both singles and doubles titles was staying composed, especially when things got tough.
