Nor'wester (Springdale) - - FRONT PAGE -

Population surveys of several woodland caribou herds in the province will be carried out over the next few weeks.

The surveys will take place around Deer Lake, Baie Verte and north along the Northern Peninsula to St. Anthony.

It includes the Gregory Plateau, Aides Lake, Hampton Downs, Great Northern Peninsula, Gros Morne and St. Anthony caribou herds.

A number of caribou will be marked using a highly visible red paint as part of the survey.

Neither the marking of the caribou, nor the paint itself, poses any harm to the animal, however. The red marking will disappear when the marked animals lose their winter coat in the spring.

A low-level flying aircraft will be used in the area to conduct the census, which will last until the end of March.
