Braves and Sabres earn splits on opening weekend of senior hockey
BAIE VERTE, NL — The twotime defending Central Senior Intermediate Hockey League champion Northeast Sabres kicked off the new season Saturday night with a 7-2 victory over the Exploits Blades.
However, they couldn’t keep the momentum going on home ice at the Tommy Ricketts Arena Sunday, falling to the same Blades team by a 10-5 margin.
Goal scorers were unavailable for the games out of Baie Verte.
The expansion Springdale Braves fell short in their first game of the 2017/2018 season, losing on the road 2-1 to the Lewisporte Seahawks. Josh Osmond scored a late goal for the Braves to provide some hope for late heroics that didn’t come to fruition.
The Braves rebounded nicely from the loss in Game 2. They jumped out to 3-0 and 4-1 leads before holding on for a 4-3 win — their first of the campaign and return to senior hockey.
Keith Noble, Chris Budgell, Jordan Snow and Dave Byrne all scored for the Braves in the win.
Goal scorers were provided by the Braves.
