Earth­roots be­gins a block­ade of Rab­bit Lake Road to pro­tect old-growth for­est at Owain Lake in Temagami. This is the lat­est in a se­ries of anti-log­ging ac­tions cov­ered by NOW re­porters avoid­ing ar­rest so sto­ries can be filed. Twenty-two pro­tes­tors are nabbed by po­lice in the first two days, but 39 re­main – some un­til late Novem­ber. NOW runs a full-page “Red Alert” ad: “Thirty-nine peo­ple stand be­tween chain­saws and one of Canada’s last old­growth forests. It’s time we all stand with them.’’
