DIRECTOR INVISIBLE CITY
What’s your doc about – in 10 words or less? Two boys growing up in the Regent Park housing project.
How’d you first hear about their story? I met Mikey and Kendell through Ainsworth, their public school teacher, who grew up in Regent. Initially, I thought I was going to follow them for a year and see what happened. It turned into three.
How close did you get to your subjects? When I started, I wanted it to be as far away from personal as could be because I’d just finished a film about my family. But I couldn’t help but get drawn into the boys’ and their moms’ lives in a very personal way.
Where will Regent Park be in five years? I think the big question is what will Regent Park be in 12 years, after the redevelopment is finished. For that I do not have an answer. You were nominated for an Oscar in 2005 for your short Hardwood. Any mementoes from the big night? I had a chocolate Oscar I brought back from the Governor’s Ball. I saved it, thinking it was going to be amazing, but it wasn’t. If you remade your film as a drama, who would star? I’d probably cast unknowns for Kendell and Mikey and have Viola Davis and Angela Bassett play their mothers.
