– A DIARY OF AN URBAN PRIEST
(Pirjo Honkasalo, Finland). 111 minutes. Subtitled. Rating: Fujioka is a handsome young guy with faraway eyes who works at a Tokyo bar, sings blues and also happens to be a Buddhist priest. Pirjo Honkasalo’s haunting, beautifully shot film follows him as he talks with various troubled souls and wrestles with his own demons, which include a mother who left him (for the priesthood, ironically) when he was two.
The film, like its subject, is quiet but full of complex emotions and an open, questing spirit.
