DESPITE THE GODS
(Penny Vozniak, Australia). 85 minutes. Subtitled. Rating: Having endured her pretentious, inane features Boxing Helena and Surveillance, I didn’t think I could respect Jennifer Chambers Lynch any less. And then I saw Despite The Gods, which chronicles her attempt to make a Bollywood monster movie in the summer of 2008.
Director Penny Vozniak may think she’s making the next Hearts Of Darkness, but Lynch is no Francis Ford Coppola, and Nagin: The Snake Goddess certainly isn’t her Apocalypse Now. Indeed, we never really get a sense of what sort of movie it is, since the inept Lynch can’t articulate her vision ( she calls it a “comedy- horror- drama-musical” at one point, which is basically just a verbal shrug) and Vozniak offers no additional details. This feels like a DVD supplement for a movie you’ll never see. Apr 28, 6: 45 pm, Cumberland 3; Apr 30, 1: 30 pm, Cumberland 2; May 5, 9: 30 pm, Innis Town Hall.
