(Wu Tsang, USA). 74 minutes. Subtitled. Rating: Wildness was the name of a weekly trans-friendly performance night at the Silver Platter, a club in the east end of Los Angeles that catered to queer Latinos and Latinas. It was launched by a quartet of friends, one of whom, Wu Tsang, has made a movie about the experience.
But instead of telling the story of the people who turned the club into a haven for trans performers (and founded a legal clinic to assist them with name changes, documentation and citizenship), Wildness takes the club’s point of view, with the Silver Platter narrating its own story in Spanish voice- over. It’s an unnecessary flourish that grows more obnoxious as the movie proceeds. May 2, 9: 45 pm, TIFF Bell Lightbox 1; May 3, 7 pm, ROM Theatre; May 6, 9 pm, TIFF Bell Lightbox 1.
